A Legacy of Craft. A New Chapter.
Black Dog Distillery's story began in 2016, when it first opened in Plainfield, Illinois. What started as a small craft distillery and tasting room quickly earned recognition for its handcrafted spirits, collecting awards at national competitions and establishing a reputation for quality.
For James Kennedy, the journey to Black Dog began with his previous experience as an owner of Will County Brewing Company. After leaving the brewery, James knew he wanted to get back into a business that brought together his passion for craft beverages, hospitality, and the local community.
In April 2023, James and his brother Kevin purchased Black Dog Distillery, seeing an opportunity to build on its established reputation while creating something entirely their own.
From the beginning, the brothers envisioned more than a traditional distillery tasting room. They wanted a speakeasy-inspired cocktail lounge — a place with character, great drinks, good food, and an atmosphere where people could unwind and enjoy themselves.
Starting with a completely blank slate, James and Kevin built their new space from the ground up. The result was a warm, intimate distill pub featuring a full liquor bar, handcrafted cocktails, a warming kitchen, live entertainment, and a grand piano that adds to Black Dog's distinctive character.
On November 19, 2025, Black Dog Distillery reopened in its new Plainfield home, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter.
Today, the brothers continue to honor Black Dog's distilling heritage while putting their own stamp on the brand, including developing and producing their own small-batch spirits right here in Plainfield.
Black Dog is more than a place to grab a drink. It's a place to gather with friends, discover something new, enjoy great music, and stay awhile.
